Oh behalf of our Fort Collins veterinary clinic, we’d like to congratulate you on your new dog! Whether you have adopted an older dog from a shelter or a new puppy, here are a few tips and tricks you can use to get him trained and used to your house rules:

Decide on rules ahead of time

Many pet owners have a hard time training their pets because the rules change depending on who is home. Maybe your spouse allows your dog on the couch but you want him to use his dog bed instead. Make sure your rules are consistent; otherwise, Fido might have a hard time keeping up.

Reward good behavior

Treats, toys, affection, and petting are all wonderful rewards for good behavior. Make sure your dog knows that he did a good job! Good behavior can include playing fetch, coming when called, and using the bathroom outside when he is potty training. On a similar note, make sure you do not praise him or give him treats when he engages in bad behavior.

Don’t let him jump up

Pups get excited when people come home! When they are little and want to jump up, many people find it to be cute. However, as they get bigger, it becomes more of a problem. When your dog jumps up on you, ignore him and leave the room. You don’t need to be mean, but do not praise or pet him when he jumps.

Discourage biting

To make sure your dog doesn’t get in the habit of biting, pretend to be seriously hurt when he nibbles you. If that doesn’t work, try to substitute in a chew toy instead of your pants or hands. If neither of these options work, try ignoring him!
