Generally, people assume you’re a great person if you’re a dog owner. However, if you own a cat, people may assume that you are a lonely middle-aged woman who is difficult to get along with. Perhaps it’s the independent nature of cats that makes people associate their owners with general antisocial behaviors.

Of course, these assumptions are mostly untrue. Both men and women own cats, and James Franco, Ian Somerhalder, Katy Perry and Taylor Swift all consider themselves cat lovers. Oftentimes, people don’t discover the endearing qualities of cats until they have one in the household. What are some of the most popular cat breeds in the US?

Not only are these cats beautiful, they are quite intelligent and active. Unlike other cat breeds, Bengals love to play in water and can even be trained to walk on a leash. A cross between domestic cats and Asian leopard cats, these felines love to jump, climb and play fetch. Keep in mind that these friendly, affectionate cats require a lot of attention, so don’t adopt them unless you are willing to spend quality time with them.

Maine Coons

These huge, fluffy cats were originally bred in Maine to control the mouse population in barns. These hearty cats are quite gentle and friendly with both humans and dogs, making the perfect addition to the family. However, this long-haired cat sheds quite a bit, so be prepared to take a piece of your Maine Coon with you everywhere you go.

With a sweet disposition and beautiful blue eyes, people love fluffy Ragdoll cats. In fact, they are so cuddly that they often go limp when you hold them, which is why they are named Ragdoll cats. Like Maine Coons, Ragdolls get along well with dogs.

Siamese Cats

Out of all the cat breeds we discuss, Siamese cats definitely have the most to say. Very vocal, these affectionate, curious cats will chat away with you and even scream for your attention if they feel ignored. As long as you don’t mind having a talker in the family, these cats are very fun-loving and sweet.

With a smooshed face and extra-long, fluffy fur, these cats look quite unusual in a dignified way. Easy-going and quiet, these felines make great companions. The one downside to these beautiful cats is their long, thick coats require constant grooming, to be prepared to brush your cat daily.

American Shorthairs

Legend has it that American shorthairs made their way to the United States on the Mayflower to help keep the rodent population under control. Their short coats are low-maintenance and these felines get along well with children and dogs and they love to hunt. If you let your American Shorthair outside, she may bring you back an unwanted treasure of her hunts.

If you want an amazing cat, you don’t have to adopt a purebred cat from a breeder. Mixed breeds and purebred cats are available in local shelters, so we highly recommend adopting a rescue cat.
