Your pet is a very important part of your life! Without your pet, your life would be much less exciting and exhilarating. What would you do without your pet? Think about it for a minute. Your pet is a part of your family, a big part of your life and there’s nothing you wouldn’t do for your pooch. So, why should avoiding the vet be one of them? Your pet needs regular check-ups. If your pet doesn’t visit the vet regularly, they will be more at risk for disease and injuries. So, how often should you pet visit with our veterinarian at Countryside Animal Hospital here in Fort Collins?
Dogs and Vaccinations
If you’ve just adopted a puppy, chances are they haven’t had their first round of shots yet. If this is the case, your dog should be visiting our veterinarian every 3 to 4 weeks until they are 16 weeks old. Your pup should be vaccinated for rabies, distemper-parvo and many other dog diseases that can be detrimental to their health. They may need other shots too, including influenza, kennel cough and Lyme disease. All of these shots are best for your dog, especially if they go to the dog park or you’re planning on taking them to a doggy daycare nearby. With them, they’ll be more at risk; and trust us, it’s not worth it.
Cats and Vaccinations
Just like dogs, cats also need some love from their local veterinarian. All the focus seems to be on puppies, but kittens are also at a serious risk for diseases and illnesses if not given shots regularly, especially if they roam about in the outdoors. Your cat is likely to be checked for feline leukemia and immunodeficiency virus, as well as be given a few different vaccinations that cover a variety of disease to which cats are prone. For Fort Collins residents, flea and tick prevention is recommended. We suggest making an appointment every 6 months for kittens up until they are 1 year old.
How often should your pet visit our veterinarian?
It all depends on age! An adult pet that is 1 to 7 years old is recommended to have yearly check-ups in order to keep them healthy from head to toe. A blood sample may also be recommended to make sure your pet is safe from heartworm. For pets that are 7 to 10 years old or older, it’s recommended you visit with our veterinarian two times per year. Depending on the health of your pet, blood and/or urine tests may be taken to ensure they are in great health.
